When is the Best Season to Replace Your Roof?

There is no set time you must wait to replace your roof, but some seasons are better than others. A good contractor can replace a roof year-round, but here are the pros and cons of each season so you can decide when it’s best to replace your roof.

Fall

Fall tends to be favored when replacing a roof, as cooler weather is a better working environment for the construction crew and the shingles. Comfortable temperatures allow the crew to complete a roof replacement much faster than in the extreme summer or winter weather. Even though there can be delays during hurricane season, rain is not as sporadic in the fall. With perfect temperatures, lower humidity, and less rainfall, your shingles will have time to seal effectively before the harsh winter temperatures. With all the benefits of replacing your roof during fall, you might want to plan a few months out with a contractor, as it can be a busy season.

Spring

Spring is an excellent season to replace your roof, as home improvement projects and warmer weather tend to go hand and hand. Starting this project in the spring has several benefits, as roofing companies are coming out of winter and are usually still available. During the spring, the humidity is typically lower than in the summer months, making it less likely that moisture will cause any damage so that you can have your brand-new roof by summertime without any significant problems. A con to consider before replacing your roof is that spring comes with sporadic showers and could cause your project to be delayed or pushed back due to the wetter weather.

Summer

Summer is the most popular time to replace a roof as the days are longer, and it tends to rain later in the day. If you plan to replace your roof in the summer, the earlier, the better, as the temperatures and humidity are typically lower. If you wait until the later months, the extreme Florida heat can make for unbearable working conditions and cause the asphalt shingles to soften, making them less durable and more prone to damage during installation.

Winter

Winter is the least common season to replace your roof, but that does not mean it can’t be done. Because of winter’s unpopularity, you may even be able to get on a roofing company’s schedule a lot quicker than in the other seasons. Even though the cold won’t stop a roof replacement, the colder weather does make shingles less pliable and harder to work with, as the tar sealant needs heat and sunlight to stick properly.

A roofing consultant can help you determine which season is best for your house based on the health of your roof, where it is located, and whether you are considering asphalt shingles, metal roofing, or solar roofing.
