What Should You Do to Prepare for a Roof Replacement?

A roof replacement is a major construction on your home and should only be done by a team of professional contractors. Upon hiring those trusting professionals, they should take care of everything construction-wise, but there are still a few minor things you can do to protect your home. Replacing an entire roof can rattle and shake a house, and there may be a few things dropped and some scratches in between. By doing some of these simple steps, you can ensure your home will come out with a better roof and nothing valuable damaged on the side.

Outside Your Home

When replacing a roof, your home becomes a construction site for a few days. With that thought in mind, cleaning the outside of your home beforehand is vital to ensure a smoother process and the safety of the crew and your family. To start, make sure your grass is cut, as having a clean yard can help spot debris, tools or materials dropped. It is also important to mark your sprinklers, turn off your irrigation system, and let the construction crew know about any outdoor power outlets. You also want to move outside furniture or vehicles from the driveway, as falling debris is common when working from heights.

Inside Your Home

Even though the construction crew will not be inside your home, there are a few minor things you can do to protect your valuables. Clear any valuables from your attic or garage and lay a plastic tarp over the floors or walls to safeguard the structure. During a roof replacement, your attic is the closest to the construction, and garages do not usually have proper installation, making both spaces vulnerable. For the living quarters of your home, secure or board windows to prevent them from getting scratched during the construction process. It is also best to remove decor from walls and move fragile dishware or items, as vibrations can cause them to shift and break.

Take a couple of days away from your home.

If major construction is happening to your home, it is better to be safe than sorry. A professional roofer will clean up the mess after the job is finished, but dust, debris, and falling nails are widespread while the project is underway. Staying out of the way of construction is best for the safety of workers, pets, and your family.
