If you’re preparing to do some roof installation either on your home or business in Lithia, and started researching single ply attachments, you may be feeling a little overwhelmed. There are many different ways of going about roofing repairs and installation with single ply options, but don’t let that be a deterrent. Talking to professionals and doing your research can go a long way, so continue reading on to find out more so you can be prepared for your next roofing project, plus a great roof repair business around Riverview, FL, that can help.

The Ins and Outs of Attachment Options

The wide range of applications and adhesives out there may come as a surprise to you, but it’s no secret in the roofing business. Times change, and so do our solvents. We’ve come a long way in recent years, both in easing the actual construction and application of roofing, along with how we’re doing it and decreasing the amount of pollution we’re putting back in the environment.

Although the number of attachment types and options have increased dramatically over the years, the two general types of attachments remain the same in the business: mechanical attachment and adhered. No matter what type of construction you’re doing, these are going to be the basic term of your installation, and can both be done in one job, depending on the layers you’re lying down for your roof.

Single Ply Attachments

If you’re seeking more of a value option in your roofing repair around Riverview, Florida, then the mechanical attachment may be the way to go. Using screws and plate fasteners to attach one long side of the membrane, the parts are then completely covered by another layer of overlapping adjacent sheet. This protects the screws and fasteners from corrosion by sealing everything inside the system.

Wind loads, though, can affect single ply mechanical attachments more than adhered attachments. During wind events, the membranes will lift up due to lower pressure zones above the roof membrane. This creates more stress on the fasteners over time, and many membrane manufacturers will offer shorter warranties or guarantees due to this added stress. But the positives of using mechanical attachments include: low initial cost, efficient labor, protected fasteners and significant thermal bridging.

Adhered attachments use solvent-based liquid adhesives to install the membranes. More water-based and low VOC types have been introduced to help deter environmental concerns. The solvents are typically rolled or broomed over the insulation and membrane undersides, allowed to dry down, and then the membrane is attached to the insulation. Adhered applications are generally more labor-intensive, but with more spray-on adhesives becoming available, this has cut down on the labor involved as well.

With adhered membranes, they resist wind force better and avoid billowing than the mechanical attachments. The fasteners receive less stress with the lower billowing, which also helps maintain the life of the membrane, and are generally more aesthetically pleasing as an adhered membrane, appearing flatter and smoother.
