5 Reasons My Roof Shingles Are Curling

You pride yourself on taking care of things – your family, pets, car, belongings, and of course, your house.  But are you truly taking care of every aspect of your house?  As it turns out, even the most attentive homeowner can miss root causes of roof damage – namely curling or buckling shingles. At Certified Roofers & General Contractors, Inc., we want to inform you of the most common reasons behind shingle curling so that you can take the preventive and proactive measures needed! This way, you can easily recall 5 reasons my roof shingles are curling the next time you inspect your roof!

The question we need to answer is quite simply, what causes curled shingles?  Is it the weather, or maybe just the type you chose?  Most of the possible causes of curling shingles actually involve installation and upkeep.

Our Top 5

1. Old Age – And we mean those shingles of course!

If your roof is passing the decade mark, it may be time to outright replace the shingles. Roof shingles wear down with age, and if this is the case, it is ideal to update your roofing sooner rather than later. If left to age further, shingles will only wear down more.

2. Poor quality materials

If your previous contractor was looking to save a few bucks, they might not have chosen the optimal material to work with. Quality ensures your shingles can withstand the wear and tear it is subjected to.

3. The installation was executed incorrectly

Maybe that friend of a friend you hired last time wasn’t exactly an expert on roofs.  Always consult with licensed contractors, such as ourselves, to be certain the job gets done correctly.

 4. You have improper attic ventilation

We all know that heat rises, which is why your attic is generally the warmest part of the home. The issue with this is when attics lack proper ventilation, heat, and moisture become stuck beneath your roof. This leads to mold, which can result in serious and long-term damage.

5.Your shingles were installed over an existing roof.

While it may be cheaper to lay new shingles over an existing roof, by not dismantling the original structure you risk the shingles curling.  Layering prevents shingles from attaching securely, causing the dreaded buckle.
